Richard Hyll

OFDA received word this afternoon Richard Hyll, 77, of Honor, Michigan, formerly of Marion and St. Croix, Virgin Islands, died January 22 of natural causes.

He was born in Dayton, OH and graduated from Bowling Green State University and then attended the Cincinnati College of Embalming. After graduating, he worked with Merle Hughes in the Hughes-Hyll Funeral Home in Marion until moving to the Virgin Islands in 1967. He and his wife Julia, also a licensed Embalmer and Funeral Director, moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands where they started and ran the Richard Hyll Funeral Service and Flower Shop until 1989 when he retired from the Funeral Service. They lived on St. Croix until moving to Michigan for better health care in 2004.

He was a member of the St. Croix Marksmanship Association and competed in the Pan American Games, was President of the St. Croix Diving Association, President of the St. Croix Council of the U.S.Navy League and a member of the St. George Village Botanical Gardens.

He is survived by his wife Julia Hughes Hyll of Marion and two children, Dr. Sharon Hyll of St. Croix and Mark Louis Hyll of Columbus.

He was cremated and private services were held.

His favorite organization was the St. Croix Animal Shelter.
