Notification of Death - Carl J. Arend

August 18, 2007

OFDA has just learned of the death of Carl J. Arend, age 84, who died August 18, 2007, at his home. Mr. Arend was a licensed funeral director for over 50 years serving as Past President of Weir Arend Funeral Directors and Ohio Funeral Directors Association Central District.

Preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Patricia Weir Arend, Mr. Arend is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Weir and Lois Echols Arend; and granddaughter, Ashley Elaine Arend, Columbus. Also survived by brother, Robert Godfrey Arend; sister-in-law, Janet Weir Webb; nephew, Todd Arend, wife, Maria and children, Katherine and Alexandra Arend; niece, Amy Arend Jones, husband, Jim and children, Sally and Jackson Godfrey Jones; niece, Carol Webb Catlin, husband, John E. III and children, Jennifer and Elizabeth Catlin; nephew, William J. Webb Jr., wife, Kay and children, Connie, Ben and Wesley Webb; and niece, Diane Webb Dortmund, husband, David and children, Lauren and Meredith Dortmund. Also survived by special caregivers, Susan and Joyce.

Veteran of World War II serving with the 1st Allied Airborne Army, U.S. Army 17th Airborne Glider Division. He was proud to have made the last drop over the Rhine River with the British 6th Airborne in March 1945, in the Battle of the Bulge. Graduated 1941 from Canton McKinley High School. Attended Harvard University under Officer Training Program until abolished and sent to Glider program. Graduate of The Ohio State University where as an undergraduate, he served as President of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and, as a graduate, he served as President of the OSU Beta Building Association for 20 years and was a Beta Fraternal Fifty. Graduate of The Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. Member of North Broadway United Methodist Church and Couples Circle #13, First Community Church. Member of 82nd Airborne Division Association. Member and Past Commander of the American Legion Post #82. 50-year member and Past President of Northwest Kiwanis Club. Past Lt. Governor of Kiwanis 10E Division. Member of Community Lodge #684 F&AM, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Aladdin Shrine. Past President of Tri Village Shrine Club, and Greater Clintonville Community Council. Member of The Moose. Life member of Upper Arlington Civic Association. Member of The Ohio State University President's Club and life member of The Ohio State University Alumni Association with whom he traveled for 25 years. Member of Faculty Club and Scioto Country Club.

A service was held August 23, 2007 with entombment at Green Lawn Mausoleum.
